My New Book "Derbyshire Landscapes"

My name is Anthony Marshall and I live in the village of Hathersage in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, England. I have been a landscape photographer and artist for thirty years and my work is held in private collections in the UK, Europe, USA and the Far East. Over the last fifteen years I have concentrated on my work with fine art galleries and to date (2008) have held forty exhibitions around the UK.
This book is my first collection of paintings, and attempts to explore the visual relationship between photography and painting. Many artists I know use reference photographs for their paintings and because of my background my photographs are not just snapshots, they provide the actual composition of the final painting. I believe this allows me to combine the best of both mediums. Over thirty years I have built up an intimate knowledge of the landscape which has generated thousands of locations. I never arrive at a location by accident only by design. I have noticed that light, shape, texture and colour often appear in a fleeting moment. This is particularly true of my "Liquidlight" work, which attempts t o capture that moment when light is reflected off the surface of water, I then apply the layers of paint to attempt to accentuate the shape, texture and colour. To create my reference photographs I use very long lenses designed to be used in sports or wildlife photography, pulling in and softening the backgrounds, giving the viewer the illusion of depth. In the "Liquidlight" material this is taken to the extreme by completely flattening the perspective, using the texture of the paint to concentrate the viewers' attention to the design and shapes of the composition. One of my favourite locations in Derbyshire is Padley Gorge on the Longshaw Estate and is one of the few remaining ancient oak woodlands, owned and managed by The National Trust. The trees are stunted in their growth bcause of the enormous amount of boulders that are strewn all over the gorge. In late autumn these boulders which are covered in moss take on an intense green colour.
